How to Build Strong Bones

From adolescents to seniors, maintaining strong bones (opens new window) is very important for a healthy body and peak performance. But did you know that many kids and adults aren’t getting the proper nourishment for strong bones and teeth? I believe we are doing two things wrong in our society not to nourish our skeletal system properly.

The first thing most of us may be doing is damaging our bone structure. Eating the wrong things can rob your bones of calcium, strength and density. One of these guilty food substances we eat (and a lot of it I may add), is sugar. Here are the downsides that sugar has on our bone structure and other vital functions of our body:

• Ingesting sugar upsets body chemistry by throwing the body’s calcium and phosphorus metabolism out of balance.

• Sugar interferes with digestion because it is harmful to the stomach lining.

• Sugar is a pure chemical so it has essentially no trace minerals or vitamins left in it. It’s an empty nutrient with nothing to offer health wise, or classified by some as “anti-nutrient.”

• Sugar suppresses the immune system.

• Because sugar has zero nutrients and is anti-nutrient, consumption of it actually robs nutrients from the body, particularly from teeth and bones.

• Sugar is additive like a drug, it can cause drastic mood swings and has withdrawal symptoms. How often have you seen children on a sugar high from sweets and candy and can’t seem to sit still? Then after 4 or 5 hours later they crash? All too often I’m a witness to this.

• Sugar depletes bone stores of calcium and phosphorous, which brings on osteoporosis for many people.

• Drinking soda pop, which has sugar substance, can cause obesity, tooth decay, caffeine dependence, and weakness of bones

With all these adverse effects that sugar has on the human body, plus refined sugar has no nutrients, it is pretty difficult to defend the perception of sugar as food rather than poison or a drug. But sadly enough sugar has drug like effects on our body and is more toxic to us than most want to admit.

The second thing we’re not doing to nourish, strengthening, and maintain strong bones is to have proper nutrition. There are ways to strengthen our skeletal system and to make sure we stay strong well into our senior years. Here are some tips on how to strengthen your bones:
